Band Playing in a GarageWe use our garages in so many ways; of course the primary function is to park our vehicles to keep them pristine and safe from the elements.  That’s not the only use, however.  Some people use their garages for workshops, where welders weld and  builders… well, they build things.  They’re also used for storage, and if you play your cards right and know how to stack… lots and lots of storage.  Other people use their garages to fix mechanical issues with their car… provided they know how to fix cars. And we can’t forget all of those bands who can’t afford rehearsal space and so they use someone’s garage instead.  It’s also the site of many many garage sales, or wedding receptions or high school graduation celebrations.

So what do all of these things have in common?  Noise. These activities create lots and lots of noise.  There’s nothing like hearing a band play full tilt or a table saw buzzing to make your neighbors more than a little crazy and force them to pay you a little less-than-neighborly visit to have a little chat about the noise coming from your garage.  It’s a chat that you would rather not have under any condition, especially if you have a real grouch for a neighbor, or a Homeowner’s Association member that has way too much time on their hands and not much of a life.

You don’t want to run afoul of any noise ordinances that could land you in hot water. You can’t stop doing the things that you need to do or love to do.  So what do you do?

That’s where soundproofing your garage comes in and that soundproofing begins with your garage door.

There are a few options to choose from. You can choose Styrofoam insulation or foil backed foam insulation that is available from any home improvement store.  You want to make sure that you cover the door completely, using the door edge gasket that goes around all of the sides.  Keep in mind that you don’t want to apply the soundproofing over any windows or anything that might interfere with your garage door’s smooth operation.
